Nicodemus is not recorded as having any further response. What Jesus had given was impossible to understand because it was not explained in a logical, progressive way. To Nicodemus it was like listening to someone talking backwards.  And he may have walked away to have something stronger than water to drink after that!

I’m with Nicodemus! Or I was…until I realized that Jesus responded in REVERSE! He deconstructed how He was able to do these miracles and where His teaching came from.

If the interaction is read in reverse, there is such clarity!

  • If you are His, what you represent shows God in everything you do.
  • If you are not His, you will only reflect what you offer, which is selfish and unholy.
  • To reflect God, you MUST have His light.
  • You must believe in Him and accept His truth.
  • If you do not believe, then you live in darkness because you only desire darkness.
  • God condemns unbelief. Know this.
  • God loves you; God has sent His only son to give life, believe in Him.
  • The Son is from God, listen to what He says and believe it!
  • Accept His testimony for it is truth from heaven, from the God you seek.
  • What is this testimony?
  • The Spirit moves only by God’s will, as do those who are filled with His spirit.
  • You must be of the spirit.
  • You MUST be born again.
  • Spirit gives birth to Spirit.
  • No one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the spirit.
  • No one can SEE the kingdom of God unless he or she is born again.

When Jesus’ response is read in reverse it makes perfect sense. Nothing was missed. Nicodemus wanted to see and not be “blind”. To SEE requires the final item in this list, to read it last.

The desire to SEE took Nicodemus well out of his comfort zone.
Leaders in the church at that time were aware that a new teaching was out there. Word on the street says it is the only way to God. Everyone is talking about it, but what is it really?
Nicodemus practiced an accepted religion and held chair on a highly regarded council. He was dialed in his position and likely worked it very well. But something new, a twist to what he regarded as ‘proper’ theology, supported by amazingly miraculous deeds, and followed by many had piqued his interest.
Nicodemus needed to see the ingredients.

What is Jesus?
Who is Jesus?
How is Jesus doing what He does?

Nicodemus wanted to see the kingdom of God. Jesus told this teacher how to SEE it, and once he knew, he could not unsee it.
The Word explains that Nicodemus had a continuing alliance with Jesus and those who surrounded him. Maybe the way Jesus answered Nicodemus brought this teacher of the law to dig deeper afterwards.  What is known is that despite the risk, Nicodemus believed.
